Best Image Formats for Fast Websites
Image formats directly affect how fast your pages load. With four major formats competing — JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF — choosing the right one for each image can feel like a gamble.
The short version
Use WebP as your default, AVIF when you need maximum compression, JPG for broadest compatibility, and PNG when you need transparency without artifacts.
JPG — the universal standard
Best for photographs and as a fallback wherever maximum browser compatibility matters. The format uses lossy compression, which removes data your eye is unlikely to notice. Its weakness is that it cannot represent transparency, so a cropped logo against a checkerboard background will still show a solid rectangle.
PNG — lossless and transparent
The go-to format for screenshots, logos, icons, and anything that needs an alpha channel. Preservation is lossless, so text edges stay crisp. The trade-off is file size; a photograph saved as PNG can be five to ten times the size of the same JPG.
WebP — the modern default
Introduced by Google and now supported in every current browser, WebP carries both lossy and lossless modes, plus alpha, and typically lands 25 to 35 percent smaller than an equivalent JPG. WebP is the safest upgrade path for a site that is still serving JPGs for everything.
AVIF — the compression champion
AVIF routinely beats WebP by about 50 percent, making it ideal for hero images and mobile friendly pages. Encoding is computationally heavier, so it suits uploads where you can wait a moment for a visibly smaller download, but not every thumbnail pipeline benefits yet.
Making the choice
- Photos on a blog — prefer AVIF, fall back to WebP for older browsers
- Icons, graphics, UI elements — use PNG or SVG
- Screenshots of interface — PNG for clarity
- Social share cards — WebP or JPG depending on your target platform
