YouTube SEO: Crafting Titles, Tags, and Descriptions That Rank

Pappu Kumar7 min read

YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, and most creators underutilize it because they treat the platform like social media instead of search. This guide covers the on-video SEO elements you control — title, description, tags, and thumbnail text — and how they work together to earn impressions.

How YouTube discovers your video

YouTube's algorithm reads your title, description, tags, subtitles, and even the audio transcript to understand what a video is about. Your job is to make that understanding unambiguous, then prove the video delivers value through watch time.

Writing titles that earn clicks

  • Front-load the keyword you want to rank for (40-60 characters)
  • Use numbers and specifics: “7 Mistakes That Break Your Resume” beats “Common Resume Mistakes”
  • Add a curiosity gap without being misleading — the video must deliver what the title promises

Descriptions that help you rank

Your first 150 characters appear above the fold in search results. Put the core value prop and your primary keyword there. Below that, structure the description with:

  1. A 2-3 sentence summary repeating the main keyword
  2. Timestamps for every section (watch time loves them)
  3. Links to related resources and your channel
  4. 3-5 relevant hashtags

Tags: broad enough to surface, specific enough to win

Use a mix: one or two broad terms (“resume tips”), two or three mid-tail phrases (“ATS resume keywords”), and specific long-tails (“resume keywords for software engineers”). YouTube treats tags as a secondary signal — the title and description matter more — but they still help the crawler understand niche variations.

Thumbnail text that complements, not repeats

Thumbnail text should restate the hook visually, not mirror the title word-for-word. If the title asks a question, the thumbnail can show the answer with a short result phrase. Keep it to 2-4 words readable at mobile size.

Use the platform tools (Title Generator, Description Generator, Tags Generator) to assemble these elements quickly, then refine them based on the Click-Through Rate in YouTube Studio.
